As the holiday season quickly consumes us in American culture, I turn my thoughts to holiday pendants that have special significance. The market is saturated with pendants that are snowmen and angels, Santas and snowflakes, but the holiday pendants that stand out the most are those that are personalized and unique.
This holiday season I am wearing my cross glass pendant filled with Holy water from the Jordan River and adorned with an etched sterling silver plate decoration and a blue crystal. This holiday pendant surpasses the glitter and glam of marketing strategies and instead personalizes my jewelry with the more universal values of this holiday season. With its delicate sterling silver chain and the white hue of the glass and water, the pendant is soft and serene like a new blanket of snow. As the holiday rush encroaches, I want to be reminded of the things that really matter: peace of mind, peace in the world, quality time with family and friends, and the essence of giving generously.
The cross, a Christian symbol of Christ’s gift to the world, reminds me that gifts do not need to be expensive or a chore to give, but rather that gift-giving is about giving of oneself.

The Kabbalah ALD pendant is an artistically designed, beautiful image of God. It mirrors the eye as we know it in the mortal world, but is meant to represent the eye of God. The meaning of the Kabbalah ALD pendant is that the eye of God is all-seeing. As God is omnipotent, meaning all authority and power, we know that God is also able to see all things and know all things. This means that God can see even those things that humans cannot see or know. The eye of God is protective as it sees the dangers that prowl around our space when we are oblivious.
According to Kabbalah, there are 72 names for God. ALD is the name often interpreted by Western languages to mean the “evil eye”. The idea of the evil eye is that it provides protection to the person who calls on it by starring down evil and sending it away. While this concept works for me, the term “evil eye” does not. You see, the term “evil eye” implies that the eye in your pendant has an evil energy, but the Kabbalah word, ALD, means that the power of god, presented in the symbol of an eye, is so great that all evil will recoil from its presence.
Therefore, the Kabbalah ALD pendant is not best described as being an “evil eye”, but rather the protective eye of god that sees evil long before we do and by its power, can penetrate and diffuse that evil so that we may never know of its potential danger to us.

I am noticing the jewelry that people wear on the university campus these days. There seems to be two kinds of necklaces: 1) chunky and decorative; and 2) smaller pendants with significance. The decorative necklaces are more commonly worn by faculty – older women. They are colorful, long, and often consist of several strands. They accentuate the clothing and tend to be complimented with matching earrings. The pendant necklaces on the other hand, though also worn by faculty women, are much more common among the younger women – the students. Smaller pendants hang on shorter and more delicate chains while larger pendants hang on longer chains or leather cords.
What I find most interesting about these pendant necklaces is the symbolism of the pendants. I wonder if these pendants are chosen because the wearer simply likes the design, or if she values the actual meaning of the pendant. No doubt it is a bit of both. But the other day I overheard two girls talking in the hall and one asked the other, “Are you a believer?” When she replied “yes”, the first one said, “well, I noticed your necklace, so I thought so”. She was wearing a small gold chain with a cross pendant hanging around her neck. This conversation pleased me because I know that although most people may not voice their opinions or ask the questions that probe in their minds, the jewelry we wear does in fact give a message and people do notice. Hearing this exchange between two students on campus confirmed this belief for me.

Apparently someone has produced evil eye jewelry recently because I saw a short clip on the news about it the other day. Honestly, I was appalled. The evil eye pendant is supposed to ward off any evil that might come your way and keep you safe. It’s an ancient symbol and is found in many different cultural traditions. Personally, I would never want an evil eye so close to my heart because the heart is where we keep our deepest and truest selves. Maybe the evil eye is powerful and will keep me safe as the myth says, but I would rather promote my safety by wearing pendants that attract positive energies and are gentle, beautiful, and powerful in positive ways. The idea that wearing an evil eye will keep evil away from me implies that I have to surround myself with evil: No! I prefer to surround myself with the power of good because that will overshadow the evil that lurks out in the world anyway. Yes, there is both good and bad in the world and I believe that we can attract either. A pendant that pulls the positive energies of the universe close to my heart is so much more meaningful and powerful than one that pushes away the bad.
